flower and new buds flowers--are these flowers actinomorphic or zygomorphic?  This is a closeup image--these flowers are actually pretty small!
 
leaves--are these leaves opposite or alternate? stems and leaves, showing covering of short stiff hairs--this kind of pubescense is called canescent (and so this species is called Verbena canescens).  This is the easiest characteristic with which to differentiate this species from Verbena halei, which is glabrous.
 
habit - perennial from a woody root; stems spreading to erect, to 18" tall
