habit and habitat in Spring--Tetragonotheca texana is an herbaceous perennial that inhabits calcareous soils with little vegetation head, showing the sparse-looking rays and the square involucre--the "tetragono" in Tetragonotheca means four-angled and refers to the square involucre.  This is an easy-to-recognize species of Asteraceae as a result!
