inflorescence in early Fall--what do we call the modified leaf-like structures around these inflorescences? inflorescence closeup--this is an example of a head (but very different from the heads in Asteraceae!).  Also, notice the hot purple stamens that are exserted (hanging out of the flowers).
habit in late Summer/early Fall--the plant in the middle is Solidago canadensis new heads (purple) and old heads (brown or gray)--Eryngium leavenworthii can be locally common!
